ショーニー族族長「他人に奉仕、他人を敬い、恐れなく生きる」~10 pieces of Native American wisdom that will inspire the way you live your life (3)

米国先住民の知恵シリーズ第3回です。当たり前の道徳を書き連ねてあるようですが、よく読むと深いです。人間関係全般、生き方全般の知恵が詰まっています! 是非ゆっくりお読みくださいませ! The third episode of Native American wisdom is a message from Chief Tecumseh in Shawnee Nation. His message sounds like general ethics, but if you read it carefully you will notice that it is much deeper than that. His message is full of wisdom about life in general including death and human relations. Please read thoroughly!

American natives always have a connection with earth, and live in harmony with other people in a cycle of nature. For them, “I” and “You (They)” are not separate. “Life” and “death” are not separate, either. We humans are all connected. They know that we are connected not only with humans but also with all the beings including the dead and nature. I think this wisdom is necessary in this modern society, because most modern people are feeling a sense of isolation down inside. If we expand our self-consciousness like them, I am sure we can live much easily. I really wish more and more people become happier with American Natives’ wisdom.

Serve, respect, and live without fear

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; Respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, Even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools And robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled With the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep And pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

– Chief Tecumseh (Crouching Tiger) Shawnee Nation 1768-1813

To say anything here I think would be to complicate the already perfect message that this communicates.

So I’ll leave it at that: serve, respect, and live without fear.
