The chess match of life

One of the things I enjoy is having an occasional game of chess. It was while I was looking at my chess board a thought came to me. It was how symbolic the chess set can be of people’s journey through life.

Just like most of the chess pieces a person may feel they don’t have many options in life and can only go in one direction. Just like the pawns, bishops and rooks can only go in one direction. They may progress slowly like a pawn or much faster like a rook or bishop. The other thing we can learn from the pawn (which after it’s first move) can only move one square at a time. However, although slowly moving across the board, if it makes it to the other side it becomes a queen. This is very symbolic of someone progressing in life. It is small steps one at a time that can lead a person to a different future.

The knight is a symbol to me of someone jumping over the obstacles in life but still limited in direction and progress.

The queen can go in any direction and move as many squares as needed. This is a good symbol of positivity for a person. To see that anyone can change and not to put limitations on what a person can be.

The king is like a person with huge responsibility. They may not be able to move or travel as fast as the queen but can still go in any direction when needed.

The whole chess match is like life. We can face obstacles and things happening we did not expect. We may have to change our plan at any time. We may also sometimes need to go backwards in order to then move forward. The match can have many different outcomes but we can learn more each time we play. Just like life we can always learn or discover something new. Just like a chess match when things seem to be going wrong, or not going the way we hoped, we can make a different move and the chess match can change very quickly. This is the same as life where things can change from negative to positive very quickly. We just have to keep playing and trying our best.

The chess match of life is not easy or simple but we can all decide our next move and change our future.
