Zen Master

Dear friends,

Walking Meditation Practice

Walking meditation is a popular form of meditation in Plum Village.

It is very simple to do, and it’s very delightful to do.

When we talk about walking meditation, it means that we walk and we are aware that we are walking.

Our mind and body are together in the here and now.

So we can be aware of the beautiful scenery around us here.

For example, we are here in Lotus Pond Monastery in Ngong Ping, Hong Kong, and I can feel the gentile breeze, and I can see the sunshine, and I can enjoy the bliss, the happiness that is around me.

And those things are possible when our mind and body are together.

And we can do this too when we practice walking meditation.

First, when we talk about meditation, we talk about to be mindful about in-breath and out-breath.

In order to establish our presence in the present moment, we need to establish ourselves with our in-breath and our out-breath.

So, breathing in, we are aware of our in-breath, breathing out, we are aware of our out-breath: In, out; in, out; in, out.

When we breathe, usually we breathe with our chest, but in meditation practice, we breathe with our belly.

This means when we breathe in, our chest expands, and there is a muscle called the diaphragm.

When our chest expands, we push our diaphragm down, and then push our belly up.

When we breathe in, the air coming in expands the chest, and the expanded chest pushes the diaphragm down and pushes the belly up.

When we breathe out, our belly will deflate and the diaphragm will come up and the diaphragm will deflate.

Breathing in, I feel my belly rising, and breathing out I feel my belly falling:
Rising, falling; in, out.

So, we need to be mindful of our breath in order to practice meditation.

When we move up to walking meditation, we combine our breath and our steps.

We can take one step with in-breath, and one step with out-breath: In, out; in, out; in, out; in, out; in, out.

We can practice slow walking meditation like this in our office.

When we get up in the morning, while going from our bedroom to our bathroom, Mom can practice walking meditation when she is cooking by walking around in her small kitchen and practice her walking slowly.

When we are outside, we can practice faster walking steps, two steps with our in-breath, three steps with our out-breath: in, in, out, out, out; in, in, out, out, out.

If you want to walk faster, for example, when you are in a metro station, where many people are walking fast to catch a train, you don’t have to be slow in order to be mindful; you can be fast and be mindful, too.

So you can take three steps with in-breath and four steps with out-breath: in, in, in, out, out, out, out; in, in, in, out, out, out, out.

It just means that we can practice walking meditation anywhere because we walk a lot.

As long as we are mindful about our in-breath and our out-breath, and we are mindful about our steps, we can practice walking meditation.

When our mind and our body are together, we can realize the beautiful things around us.

I can hear birds chirping, I can see the sunshine, and I can feel the breeze, that’s because my mind is with my body.

When we walk with our mind together with our body, and with our steps, we can see the beautiful things around us.

So, walking meditation is a joyful practice; it’s easy to do.

And you can do it anytime, anywhere.

As long as you walk, you can practice walking meditation.

Enjoy your walk.
